Market leader in feeding system technology Rhein-Nadel Automation GmbH (RNA) takes over part of Nexolink Solutions AG

Rhein-Nadel Automation GmbH (RNA) has acquired all assets of the former start-up Nexolink Solutions AG regarding the Sensor Connector, a device that gathers data and conditions of a machine with the help of sensors. The deal includes all intellectual property rights for the devices and IoT Platform, laboratory equipment, stock, etc. All data is analyzed and visualized on an IoT Platform, which is also part of the deal. With the acquisition RNA obtains its own IoT Platform and secures know-how in data capturing technology. RNA will market the IoT Platform and Sensor Connector under the name IoT ConnectBox in the future. With its new IoT ConnectBox, RNA is now able to offer an IoT Platform together with its feeding systems in order to analyze data such as frequency, temperature, output rate, and other values with the objective to also offer a predictive maintenance solution. Furthermore, RNA offers the IoT ConnectBox also to all other customers, that want to use the device with their own machines. Each customer thus, has the possibility to gather all data from their existing machines and to manage the data on an own IoT Platform.

The IoT ConnectBox has 8 digital and 8 analog inputs. One big advantage of the IoT ConnectBox is that it does not need any internet connection as it operates via an integrated SIM card, which transfers all data via a GSM-Antenna. The IoT ConnectBox can be used with any machine, that can be equipped with or already has sensors.

Smartrac Launches Cattle Ear Tag – a High-Performance RAIN RFID Product for Animal Identification

Smartrac is further extending its Animal ID portfolio by launching its new Cattle Ear Tag. The RAIN RFID product comprises a chip module that is inductively coupled to an advanced RFID antenna design, which ensures outstanding ruggedness in demanding applications. Its UHF-based technology allows reading of multiple tags simultaneously, at high speed and at distances of up to five meters/15 feet.

For livestock tagging, LF has been the standard frequency for many years. However, that standard nowadays presents some limitations relevant to the livestock industry, such as restricted read range and signal collision that prevents multiple tag reading. Smartrac’s new Cattle Ear Tag effectively overcomes these limitations as its RAIN RFID technology enables multiple tags to be read simultaneously, more quickly and at much greater distances than existing LF RFID tags. The typical read distance under practical conditions (tag applied to cattle ear, outer antenna functional) is approximately five meters/15 feet. This extended read range and speed significantly reduce operator risk and increase speed of handling and data collection throughout the entire supply chain.

Superior resistance to harsh environmental impacts

Smartrac’s Cattle Ear Tag is a GS1 UHF Gen2-compliant transponder comprising a chip module that is inductively coupled to an embroidered RFID antenna. Compared to traditional etched antennas, Smartrac’s wire-made embroidered antenna offers more resistance against fractures or disruption in the antenna structure. The embroidered antenna wire is affixed to the carrier material – namely thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) foil – using the state-of-the-art “Tailored Wire Placement” technique.

The antenna is not directly bonded but inductively coupled to the chip loop, which itself has a tiny inner antenna within its encapsulation. The absence of any intermetallic connection between chip loop and antenna also contributes to the tag’s ruggedness. If the outer antenna is damaged by brute force, the tag can still be read at short distances using the inner antenna’s basic transmission capabilities.

“To develop our new Cattle Ear Tag, we have worked closely with livestock industry experts. EDD®– Excellent PIM performance at minimal space

Due to increasing demands of miniaturization, telecommunications infrastructure requires smaller devices. At the same time modern transmission technologies require many connections per device and make high demands on intererence-free functionality.
This results in the need for a connector that has been specially developed for radios and antennas with smaller footprints and offers excellent passive intermodulation, return loss and RF characteristics. The solution is a small, high-performance RF connector series. EDD® has been designed by IMS Connector Systems to meet the present and future requirements of Small Cells and 5G networks and antennas. The EDD® series is characterized by its robust design, compact size, with a maximum flange height of only 12.7 mm, and very low PIM-values.
In contrast to previous connector series the PIM-stable EDD® combines the compact size needed for radios and filters in Small Cells und Macro Cells, and Distributed-Antenna-Systems (DAS) with the robustness that is a requirement for connectors in harsh environment. The compact size of EDD® is 55 % smaller than the 4.3-10 and 68 % smaller than the 7/16 connector, nevertheless all indoor and outdoor RF connector specifications are met.

HUBER+SUHNER drives E-Mobility solution forward at EV TECH EXPO 2018

HUBER+SUHNER, leading manufacturer of components and systems for optical and electrical connectivity, will present its quality power solutions to combat the demand for fast charging systems in the most harsh and demanding environments at the Electric & Hybrid Technology Expo Europe 2018, in Hannover, May 15-17.

The state-of-the-art RADOX® HPC (High Power Charging System) for electric vehicles allows to increase the power-throughput of a charging cable to 500 kW and so grants fast and effective charging – with charge times of less than 15 minutes (80% State of Charge). At the same time, it offers a smaller cable cross section compared to the traditional high-powered cable option as they are thin, flexible, lightweight and easy to handle.

“Currently, charging times are lengthy and disruptive for everyday life. Many charging spots offer an average output of 7-50 kW, with full charging taking more than three hours. But with our HPC cable offering, charging currents of up to 500 kW are possible and take as little as 15 minutes,” said Max Göldi, Market Manager HPC at HUBER+SUHNER. “The RADOX® HPC is designed to be fast-charging, light-weight and easy to handle making it the go-to product for electric vehicle drivers to turn to and the Electric & Hybrid Vehicle Technology Expo Europe is the perfect place to showcase our EV solutions.”

Also on display will be the high voltage distribution unit (HVDU) and the RADOX® automotive connection system (RACS) 2nd generation. The HVDU is fully customisable and assures power distribution between all high voltage components within every electric vehicle, land, water or air – even in demanding and harsh environments such as snow ploughs, street sweepers and trucks. By combining the HVDU with the innovative RACS wire-to-device connection system, users can benefit from considerably smaller space requirements, with 360° electromagnetic shielding and excellent environment protection.

Another innovative technology at the show will be the injection moulded radar antennas for autonomous driving. With a conformal antenna design and low loss distribution network, the antenna is perfectly positioned to aid the rollout to autonomous vehicles. HUBER+SUHNER will showcase a live demonstration of this technology directly at the booth.

Epson starts shipping two new IMUs optimized for autonomous applications

Seiko Epson Corporation (TSE: 6724, “Epson,”) has developed and recently commenced shipping samples of two new, high-performance six-axis inertial measurement units (IMU)1, the M-G370 and the M-G365. Both models are scheduled for volume production at the end of 2018.

Epson launched its first IMU in 2011. Since then, Epson IMUs have been used in a multitude of applications, earning an excellent reputation for outstanding performance and quality. Rapidly increasing demand from autonomous precision agriculture machinery, intelligent construction machinery and unmanned vehicle applications has fueled demand for high-accuracy positioning in a compact, cost-effective package. Epson’s new IMUs were developed to offer outstanding quality and productivity with the FOG2-class performance needed to realize practicable autonomous driving and navigation. In addition, the new IMUs maintain backward compatibility with the earlier M-G364 and M-G354, making it easy to upgrade performance.

RFS to showcase advanced antenna solutions to simplify the evolution to 5G at MWC 2018

Radio Frequency Systems (RFS), a global designer and manufacturer of total-package solutions for wireless and broadcast infrastructure, will be showcasing three new antenna product lines at Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2018 to help streamline the evolution to 5G. 

As operators continue to invest in new hardware as a means of keeping pace with growing capacity demands, it’s become all the more important to introduce high performing infrastructure designed for today’s complex macro-environment. RFS CEO, Herbert Merz commented, “To help address this and satisfy our customers, we have extended our product range looking at the specific challenges operators face with LTE-A and 5G infrastructure and designing an innovative portfolio to solve these, driving further efficiency and reducing Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) for existing and next-generation network deployments. 

MWC will see RFS showcase three flagship products:

• Active Passive Antenna

RFS is introducing the first Active Passive Antenna (APA) with interleaved radiating layers for 3.5GHz mMIMO. As a key enabler of 5G, mMIMO systems will be used on both small cell and macro sites, however, operators face the challenge of deploying the infrastructure to support this on crowded cell sites. RFS will exhibit a prototype APA at MWC and demonstrate how it solves many of the technical and economic challenges operators face with mMIMO on LTE-A and 5G networks.  

• Multi-band Antennas

Revealed for the first time at MWC will be RFS’s new multi-band antenna range to support the newly reallocated L band for LTE applications. This new product range holds the greatest potential for operators as it not only allows the addition of the 1.4GHz band, but has an evolution path to support 3.5GHz and 2.3GHz TDD applications. 

The design features and capabilities of the high-performance, multi-band platform allow operators to expand capacity and coverage, as well as integrating new frequencies, delivering a product that not only supports the frequencies of today but can easily adapt to integrate the next-generation frequencies as networks evolve. 

• Microwave Antenna Systems

To offer a more efficient microwave backhaul solution to meet the needs of growing 4G, and 5G networks, RFS will demonstrate its new Dual Band Microwave Antenna system which combines two frequency bands into a single antenna. RFS’s Dual Band system provides benefits both on reducing CAPEX due to lower transportation and installation costs; and on savings OPEX due to a reduction in tower leasing costs. 

RFS will also be showcasing an expansion of its existing SerenityLine family of microwave antennas, built to meet ETSI Class 4 standard to increase the link capacity of a network by deploying new microwave links where high levels of interference are present; to help mobile operators satisfying their customer connection expectations.

Alongside the above newly developed products, RFS will be discussing its broader portfolio of end-to-end solutions for indoor and outdoor capacity extension and network densification with small cells, uniquely positioning RFS as a full-service strategic partner to operators and OEMs.

RFS and Blue Danube Systems Announce First Active Passive Antenna (APA)

RFS and Blue Danube have demonstrated the first Active Passive Antenna (APA) that combines a 96 element Hybrid Massive MIMO antenna for mid band frequencies (1700-2300 MHz) and a low band passive antenna for low band frequencies (600-900 MHz). Outdoor testing results confirm APA performance is uncompromised by the integration.  Several variants have been tested, with gains over 23 dBi gain in the mid band active antenna and 17 dBi in the low band passive antenna. The first commercial system trial will begin in March. The APA supports todays LTE 4G systems and is upgradeable to 5G. The product will be showcased at Mobile World Congress in both the RFS and Blue Danube booths. The APA is contained in one panel and does not increase the site antenna counts. The system provides increased capacity while reducing the OPEX of a multiple antenna solution. 

“Wireless networks must address not only future capacity but existing tower top and siting challenges. Massive MIMO offers significant gains in wireless data rates,” said Mihai Banu, CTO at Blue Danube. “By combining Massive MIMO with a passive low band we are providing operators a flexible solution for site implementation.”

As network demand grows, operators have to rely on acquiring more sites, obtaining additional spectrum and deploying multiple frequency bands. This results in a shift towards complex multiband passive antennas to reduce OPEX and meet zoning and environmental regulations. With the introduction of Massive MIMO active antennas for 4G LTE today and 5G in the future, a new dimension of complexity is added to existing deployments.  By integrating Massive MIMO systems with passive antennas into an APA, a number of potential issues can be solved. APA’s do not increase the site antenna counts with a minimal size increase to reduce visual impact and wind loading.  APA’s also help solve some technical challenges faced by Massive MIMO radios such as thermal dissipation and number of RF connections. All of these will ease and reduce site negotiations and its related OPEX and CAPEX.

RFS Announces Development of Dual Band Microwave Antenna Solutions

Radio Frequency Systems (RFS), a global designer and manufacturer of total-package solutions for wireless and broadcast infrastructure, today announced it has developed a new dual band antenna solution to enable mobile operators to keep up with increasing capacity demands, better utilize available spectrum, reduce installation costs, and cut down on tower leasing fees. 

RFS will offer compact 1ft and 2ft dual band solutions to support a traditional frequency band plus the higher frequency E-Band from a single antenna. The ability to combine a low frequency band that has good propagation properties and the higher frequency with greater capacity will allow carriers to leverage the benefits of both bands – supporting higher capacities and broader availability over longer distances. 

Carrier aggregation with a single dual band antenna has been demonstrated to reduce total cost of ownership (TCO) and result in CAPEX/OPEX savings by minimizing transportation needs, installation time, and tower loading and rental fees.
