MainConcept Releases Multi-Platform ProRes Decoder SDK 1.0

MainConcept, a leading provider of video codec technology, today announced the availability of a cross-platform SDK enabling developers to ingest Apple ProRes video from MOV and MXF containers in any software solution or workflow.

Apple ProRes is a major format used in professional production environments. The bitstream syntax of this intra-frame codec was publicly released as SMPTE RDD-36 in 2015. While ProRes video was originally designed to be carried in QuickTime’s MOV containers, SMPTE RDD-44 adds storage of ProRes in MXF file format for IMF-based workflows.

The MainConcept ProRes Decoder SDK 1.0 is now available for licensing to support native ingest from both MOV and MXF container formats for use in transcoding, editing and player applications without the need to install any 3rd party tools. MainConcept is first to offer a SDK for professional licensing that allows import and real-time playback of ProRes footage on Windows, macOS and Linux.

Successful rehabilitation of trans-o-flex

In 2018, for the first time in ten years, the trans-o-flex logistics group was able to generate a profit. "After having reached the break-even point in 2017, this result definitely shows that the rehabilitation of the company has been successful”, says Wolfgang P. Albeck, CEO of trans-o-flex. Traditionally, the company does not provide any information on the amount of profit.

For Albeck, the successful turnaround is “clear proof that our strategy of focusing on 100 percent quality has paid off.” For a logistic company, service quality is even more important than cost optimisation. “Together with efficiency, reliability is the highest value we can offer our customers.” In 2018, in addition to its focus on quality, trans-o-flex also continued its strategy of streamlining shipments, which began two years ago. “We have again disposed of shipments that do not fit into our structure or that were unprofitable”, explains Albeck. Despite streamlining shipments, the company’s turnover increased to 468 million euros. “This also reflects the consistent further development of our company into an express service provider, because the number of shipments we deliver on a particular day or to a time selected by the customer has increased both in relation to the total volume of all shipments and in absolute terms.”

In 2019, trans-o-flex intends to continue this growth course. The budget agreed upon with the shareholders provides for an investment volume of € 35 million for the current year. “We will invest this money primarily in the acquisition of new vehicles, IT and sorting technology. In addition to this, locations will be renewed and expanded”, explains Albeck. In 2018, trans-o-flex had a workforce of 2,047 employees, 0.6 % less than in the previous year. The number is expected to rise slightly in 2019. “We will be hiring additional staff, mainly in Sales and Customer Service.”

Air collector and thermal storage materials for air conditioning in buildings

Profound changes are occurring in the energy and construction sector, so traditional business models are no longer sufficient. The interaction of smart materials, sustainable energy-efficient systems, decentralized storage and the use of renewable energies and existing heat sources is becoming increasingly important. The acquisition and evaluation of measurement data forms a sound basis for improving energy efficiency. Based on these data, models for energy balancing can be created, and the interaction between energy demand and availability can be optimized.

At the Fraunhofer ICT energy campus in Pfinztal, individual thermal storage systems tailored to the respective application profile are developed and tested to increase energy efficiency. For example, in the STARK project the air conditioning of a building is implemented. Here, a 100m² collector array is used in combination with a zeolite and latent heat storage device. In energy-specific processes, the process data are recorded, evaluated and optimized with modeling and simulation tools.

We will demonstrate:

• Sorption and latent heat storage materials for active and passive thermal management

• A hybrid component, consisting of insulating and storage material, which combines the insulating properties of foams with the heat-storing and tempering properties of phase change materials (PCM)

• Lightweight air collectors in combination with zeolite and PCM storage devices, which enable the supply of heat and cold at any time

• Modeling and simulation of heat storage systems in their applications

Plunet keeps growing: New faces at all three sites in 2018

Plunet continued to expand in 2018 with a total of seven new team members in Germany and the USA. The leading provider of business and translation management software has reacted to a growing customer base with new hires in the implementation, product management, quality management, back-end development, and support departments.

Three reinforcements in the implementation team

The implementation team has gained three new members, who will be responsible for online and on-site training sessions for international customers. Whether a language department, a translation agency or a partner university of the Plunet Academy – with Kleio Mavridou, Sofia Lindblad (both in Berlin) and Sonia Gamboa (in the USA) ready to communicate the essential Plunet know-how, the wide spectrum of Plunet customers can be expanded even more quickly.

Increased quality management in Berlin

The experienced software tester Robert Lenz has joined the quality management team in Berlin as a QA automation engineer. He is responsible for process optimization in the software development and enhanced automation in quality assurance.

Two new specialists in Würzburg

The back-end and support teams at Plunet’s office in Würzburg each gained a new member in 2018.

Simon Heider is focusing on the implementation of improvements in Plunet BusinessManager and software maintenance in the back-end development. He is also responsible for integrating external data services into the system.

As part of the support team, Andreas Schepp is a direct point of contact for Plunet customers and will assist them when they have any user questions or problems.

New product owner for Plunet BusinessManager & Plunet API

Florian Ilgenfritz, the newest member of the Plunet team, will be responsible for deciding which system integrations will be implemented and when. As an additional product owner for the Plunet solution and Plunet API, he will take over the planning and prioritization of new features and boost the product management team with his technical expertise and management experience.

2019: Focus on quality management

With seven new employees, Plunet is focusing on enhancing quality management. The new recruits in all departments will make an important contribution to the upcoming Plunet 7.4 software release and increase the efficiency of processing customer requests and queries.

Holistic solutions for modern plant maintenance

In a world in which almost everything can be measured and evaluated, it is important to make the right information available at the right time, in the right place, suitable for the respective user. The integrated solutions from GIB make this possible and open up new ways for optimized plant maintenance in the most modern way.

Well-functioning plant maintenance relies on ensuring that employees are always provided with the relevant data and information at the right time and in the right place, depending on their respective roles in the company. Only in this way can they react in the best possible way to incidents in the plants. To meet this requirement, a solution is needed where all business processes are networked. The IoT tool, “Shop Floor Integration” (SFI) from GIB, closes the important gap between “Operational Technology” (OT) and “Information Technology” (IT). By means of intelligent systems such as the KPI-Tower and the GIB Dispo-Cockpit Planning, it is also possible to monitor the processes based on key performance indicators and optimize the production planning. Plant maintenance thus becomes integrative and company-wide, quickly and effectively from the production manager to the maintenance worker.

KPIs at a glance

This can be illustrated by the following scenario: The KPI tower enables the production manager to always keep an eye on the key performance indicators. Thus, thanks to the established Early Warning System that monitors the technical assets continuously, he can detect an impending standstill caused by a bottleneck machine in time and initiate specific countermeasures without which a major order could not be completed on time. Based on this real-time information, a plant maintenance process is triggered automatically and can be processed efficiently. The intelligent use of sensors which are connected to downstream systems can effectively monitor the condition of the system and automatically initiate follow-up processes in the SAP ERP system. This process information from the SAP ERP system together with the sensor data from the Early Warning System provide a comprehensive view of the pending plant maintenance task.

Optimal machine utilization

The maintenance employee receives the problem message with high priority on his tablet. With just a few clicks in the GIB “Mobile Maintenance App,” he will gain all relevant context information on the affected machine. For example, he receives an overview of the previously reported problem cases and orders for the machine on a timeline. He can thus deduce the possible cause of the deviating sensor data from this and check the availability of any required spare parts. Using GIB’s comprehensive solutions, he can see when the spare part is available and schedule the repair so that it does not affect the production process. This ensures optimal utilization of the machine.

Mixed reality

Arriving at the machine, he picks up his tablet again. The mixed reality function and the use of the tablet camera enable him to call up more information about the machine. He is also able to view the machine in more detail on his tablet via 3D display. For example, he can rotate it and display areas that are difficult to access and that are not easily visible with the naked eye. The plant maintenance technician has access to a detailed repair manual via the app and can execute the repair step by step. Thus, the onset of wear on the bottleneck machine is quickly resolved and impending failure averted. The plant maintenance technician documents the repair in the system. The information message is automatically transmitted by the SFI to all relevant areas of the SAP system for further processing, e.g., in updated KPIs that clearly show the production managers that their production is still going forward as planned. The standstill has been averted, the production of the important major order is ensured.
