PIAE 2019 – Tradition meets innovation

PIAE 2019 presents itself in a new guise. The traditional VDI Plastics Congress will present its completely new, revised event concept from 3 to 4 April 2019 in Mannheim: More content, interactive program items and modern entertainment.

Relying on proven traditions, opening up new space for innovations and new products – The international VDI Plastics Congress has experienced, accompanied and addressed numerous changes in the automobile in its more than fourty-year history. In order to take current developments into account and always stay up to date, the VDI Wissensforum has fundamentally redesigned the structure of the congress in Mannheim.

The basis for the renewal was a detailed survey of the participants. With the new title, the foundation for the increasingly international orientation was already laid in 2018. Now follows the encompassing ‚makeover‘.

Thus, the program committee and a biennial panel of experts will ensure the quality of the presentations. Prolonged lecture slots and this year’s special topic "Asia", with a focus on China, provide intensive insights into specific topics. Workshops, World Cafés, Jobwall and the central meeting area promote interaction and communication between participants and experts.

A new spatial design as well as a modern designed exhibition area with prototypes and research projects round off the innovative appearance of the traditional event.

Acando implementing end-to-end monitoring for the webshop of a leading European DIY chain

One of the largest operators of DIY superstores and garden centers in Europe has implemented an end-to-end application performance monitoring system for its web shop. Key figures on webshop traffic and user-oriented performance can thus be viewed on an integrated basis. The selection and introduction of a suitable monitoring tool was the responsibility of the webshop specialists at management and IT consultancy Acando.

To ensure the best possible shopping experience, the performance of the DIY online shop is to be continuously improved as the product range grows. Application performance monitoring (APM) provides the metrics required for this.

With the new solution, the company wants to additionally granulate monitoring of the network, web server and application levels and, above all, gain a deeper insight into the active web shop applications. Consequently, it is now possible to view the performance from the user’s point of view and to render the interfaces, e.g. the checkout or payment process, more visible. The application tracks the shop user visiting and purchasing process from the beginning to the end of the session, providing a complete overview in the form of graphical dashboards and automating regular reporting.

The company was supported by management and IT consultancy Acando in the selection and roll-out of the APM solution. Acando has been supporting web shop development and operation for many years. With respect to the selection of a suitable monitoring tool, Acando not only provided a good market overview but also the necessary technical expertise for the system, software and network architecture as well as project experience.

A number of newly developed dashboards provide important data for maintaining and enhancing the web shop. The DIY chain can now also evaluate shop user satisfaction more effectively on the basis of the key figures, analyze performance fluctuations with greater precision and define appropriate measures.

Epson Europe Electronics GmbH ("Epson") presents the RA8804 DTCXO RTC.
Designed for precision time keeping, Epson’s RA8804 Automotive DTCXO RTC uses Digitally Temperature-Compensated Crystal Oscillator (DTCXO) technology to achieve ±3.4 or ±8 ppm accuracy over temperature of -40 to +85 °C or -40 to +105 °C respectively, equivalent to 9 or 20 seconds per month. This high accuracy is essential for precise time keeping, as required by car clocks, infotainment, battery management, and other automotive applications.

Epson’s RA8804 includes a crystal, a digitally temperature-compensated crystal oscillator (DTCXO), and counters to keep track of time and date. Epson’s RA8804 also includes automatic battery backup and time-keeping functions such as alarms and timers. 

Epson’s RA8804 with a supply voltage of 1.6-5.5 V is low power (0.35 μA (typ) backup current), has a frequency output pin which can be programmed to 1 Hz, 1024 Hz, or 32.768 kHz and is offered in a small package (3.2 x 2.5 x 1.0 mm3).
Epson’s RA8804 is manufactured on a dedicated automotive line and meets the automotive quality standard AEC-Q100. PPAP data is available upon request.
