Close to the Customer – ODU to expand market in Korea

As of January 1, 2019 ODU has established its newest ODU company in Korea. Kai Schneider is Managing Director of ODU Korea Inc. Together with the longstanding trading partners it is his task to further expand sales in Korea, to find new sales channels and to introduce ODU connector solutions into Korean medical technology and robotics. "Currently, we are strong in Korea, especially in the field of e-mobility and military technology. We also want to prove our know-how in new fields and applications", says Kai Schneider.

Schneider is a mechanical engineer and brings a lot of experience in mechanical engineering as well as his knowledge of Korean culture. With its new company, ODU wants to be ready and personally accessible to its customers and partners. Kai Schneider will act as the interface between Korea and ODU in Mühldorf (Bavaria). "We also care about the geographical closeness to the customer. We already are present in Japan and China, and that has proven to be successful", says Denis Giba, ODU Managing Director. As a specialist for electrical connector systems, ODU develops solutions exactly to customers’ requirements and specifications. In close cooperation ODU creates technically and economically optimal connector systems that meet the customer needs.

Smart Galvanometer Scanner for Medical and Scientific Applications

ZSF – Fully clamped

The hydromechanical spring-loaded cylinders of the ZSF series from JAKOB Antriebstechnik offer robust and reliable clamping elements. These spring-loaded systems can be used wherever displaceable or movable machine parts must be temporarily clamped or locked. Other applications can be found in jig construction and for workpiece or tool clamping.

The spring-loaded systems interact mechanically-hydraulically. The clamping force is applied mechanically by a prestressed plate spring package. The hydraulics are only needed for the release stroke of the elements, whereby the tie rod or pressure pin is released. This system ensures a high level of operational safety, since the clamping force is always maintained at full height, regardless of oil pressure or leakage losses. In the operation the pressure or tension piston is alternately acted upon by the plate spring package or the hydraulic pressure. This means that the spring pack is compressed with increasing oil pressure, the spring force increases. At set pressure, the corresponding nominal clamping force is achieved as the reaction force of the plate spring package. To release the pressure or tension piston, a higher hydraulic pressure is required, which is proportional to the release stroke up to a maximum value. This means that the setting pressure is required only for the initial installation for exact force adjustment. In the actual operating cycle, the cylinders are driven either without pressure or with release pressure. For spring-loaded cylinders, a mandrel or tie rod is screwed into the threaded hole of the tensioning piston and secured (on request, in one piece or with special thread). Operation requires a hydraulic unit that should be equipped with a pressure gauge, a pressure relief valve, a switching solenoid valve and a pressure switching device.

The hydromechanical spring-loaded systems can score with many advantages. Due to the short operating times of the hydraulic unit, this system offers advantages in terms of economy. The acquisition costs are low, the reliability is increased, the application areas are diverse and the operation is very simple.

New piezo sensor module also with digital I²C signal

Integrative pressure measurement in the smallest of spaces: WIKA has expanded its portfolio for OEM applications with the very compact MPR-1 piezo sensor module with standardised output signal.

With a diameter of 19 mm and a height starting from 17 mm (depending on the process connection), the sensor module can be integrated into a wide variety of products and systems. The custom-fit specification is supported by the selection of analogue and digital output signals. The version with digital I²C signal features very low power consumption and a fast response time (3 ms). It is therefore ideal for applications with battery operation. In addition, a temperature value can be output via the I²C signal.

The model MPR-1 is available, as standard, with gauge and absolute pressure measuring ranges (from 0 … 0.4 bar to 0 … 25 bar) as well as vacuum measuring ranges. It measures with an accuracy of ≤ ±0.5 % of the span. On request, a higher accuracy and other pressure ranges can be realised.

JAKOB miniature couplings create precision

The miniature couplings from JAKOB are designed as servo compensating couplings for the offset or the axial displacement of two axes. For the different applications such. For tachographs, NC-axes, stepper motors, potentiometers, robot drives, linear units, handling devices, angle encoders or servo drives, various designs are available. The shaft is fastened by clamping ring or threaded pins. The miniature couplings are available as bellows couplings, elastomer couplings or cross slide couplings. As bellows couplings they are absolutely play and maintenance-free and designed for the transmission of high speeds. They are characterized by a high torsional rigidity and a low mass moment of inertia. Thus, the angular true, backlash-free transmission of the rotational movement is possible. The compact elastomer miniature couplings as pluggable, backlash-free and flexible shaft couplings can compensate for slightly larger shaft offsets. They are electrically insulating and have a good vibration-damping behavior. The advantages of the also electrically insulating cross slide coupling are in addition to a very short length, a large displacement capacity, low restoring forces, the pluggability and a resulting arbitrary combination of different bore diameter. In normal operation, the couplings are maintenance-free and with proper installation, the JAKOB miniature couplings achieve an almost unlimited service life. Due to the proven modular system and the storage of the common diameters shortest delivery times are guaranteed.

Industrial Ethernet and Fieldbus communication with INtime® 6.3

Hilscher has upgraded its cifX PC-card drivers to support the latest INtime 6.3 version. The TenAsys®’ INtime® real-time platform, in combination with Hilscher’s cifX PC-cards, offers the possibility to run Real-Time Ethernet and Fieldbus communication in time-sensitive applications on Windows-based PCs.

INtime® for Windows is a real-time runtime environment, which expands standard Windows PC-systems by adding hard real-time capabilities according to industrial requirements and it has been enabled for the direct use of cifX PC-cards. INtime runs real-time applications in its own address space including the INtime cifX driver, though the card configuration is still manageable from the Windows tools by a special version of the cifX application DLL.

Hilscher’s PC-card family cifX is available in all common card formats: PCI, PCI Express, Compact PCI, Low Profile PCI Express, Mini PCI Express, Mini PCI, PC/104 and PCI 104.  Due to Hilscher’s platform strategy, all PC-cards use the same driver and tools, independent of the chosen protocol and card format.  This gives customers a maximum of flexibility.  When changing to another communication protocol, only a different firmware needs to be loaded.  A complete software package including tools, documentation and loadable firmware files is always included in the scope of delivery.

Customers reduce their efforts and decrease their time-to-market significantly through setting up their PC-based application with cifX and INtime – two reliable technologies in the automation market for many years.  Furthermore, the development risk and development time will be decreased on the customer’s side.  In addition, customers will be able to react to changing market demands through an easy and quick change between different protocols and hardware-interfaces – with Hilscher’s platform strategy and TenAsys’ INtime real-time platform.

PIAE 2019 – Tradition meets innovation

PIAE 2019 presents itself in a new guise. The traditional VDI Plastics Congress will present its completely new, revised event concept from 3 to 4 April 2019 in Mannheim: More content, interactive program items and modern entertainment.

Relying on proven traditions, opening up new space for innovations and new products – The international VDI Plastics Congress has experienced, accompanied and addressed numerous changes in the automobile in its more than fourty-year history. In order to take current developments into account and always stay up to date, the VDI Wissensforum has fundamentally redesigned the structure of the congress in Mannheim.

The basis for the renewal was a detailed survey of the participants. With the new title, the foundation for the increasingly international orientation was already laid in 2018. Now follows the encompassing ‚makeover‘.

Thus, the program committee and a biennial panel of experts will ensure the quality of the presentations. Prolonged lecture slots and this year’s special topic "Asia", with a focus on China, provide intensive insights into specific topics.
