Knorr-Bremse reaches agreement with employee representatives up to 2020

– Employees will receive a one-off payment of EUR 300 in April 2018 – A 5.0% pay rise will come into effect on July 1, 2018
– Two further 1.5% pay rises will come into effect on July 1, 2019 and July 1, 2020
– From 2019, in July Knorr-Bremse will pay an annual bonus of 12% of the monthly wage, depending on the commercial situation of the Company
– Attractive working time autonomy regulations will be introduced for white-collar workers

Knorr-Bremse and the employee representatives have negotiated an attractive agreement for the approximately 4,500 employees at almost all Group companies in Germany that are not covered by a collective agreement. The deal combines a financial component – comprising 10% more pay over the next three years – with flexible working time arrangements that take both employees’ interests and operational requirements into account. The agreement ensures that Knorr-Bremse’s employees will share in the Company’s success.

“In an age of ever-increasing globalization and digitalization, we need to focus more strongly on operational requirements and our employees’ interests. In direct negotiations with the employee representatives we have been able to deliver on this aim,” says Klaus Deller, Chairman of the Executive Board of Knorr-Bremse AG. As well as the financial aspects of the pay rise, the agreement also includes the introduction of flexible working time arrangements. “We firmly believe that working time autonomy for white-collar workers is in the best interests of our employees,” says Deller. Accordingly, from July 2018 all white-collar workers will be given the option of switching to a flexible model that gives them freedom to choose when they perform their work.

The agreement also allows employees to temporarily or permanently reduce or increase their regular working week, provided that this is compatible with operational requirements. Other measures include a one-time opportunity for employees to convert a pay rise into a reduction in their working week.

For an international player like the Knorr-Bremse Group, it is becoming more and more important to be able to respond flexibly to market requirements. According to Klaus Deller, this means that it is important “to find in-house solutions tailored to Knorr-Bremse’s particular situation. We must be capable of responding rapidly and flexibly to market opportunities in order to grow our business for everyone’s benefit. After all, you have to generate earnings before you can distribute them.” “Together we have reached an agreement that provides our employees in Germany with the security to plan ahead as far as 2020. We were also able to negotiate attractive rulings on flexible working time and even working time autonomy,” adds Michael Jell, an employee representative on the Supervisory Board of Knorr-Bremse AG.

Concardis strengthens market position in SME segment: acquisition of PCS PayCard Service and Simplepay

  • The full-service payment provider is acquiring local giants in the terminal business in Berlin and Mannheim
  • Close collaboration planned in sales in particular
  • PCS PayCard Service and Simplepay will remain independent companies in their GmbH structures

Eschborn-based full-service payment provider Concardis is acquiring PCS PayCard Service GmbH and Simplepay GmbH, based in Mannheim and Berlin respectively. Both companies are independent sales organisations (ISO) and well-established giants in their respective regions, providing solutions for cashless payments at retail points of sale, especially with small and medium-size enterprises – a market segment where Concardis would like to expand its presence. PCS PayCard Service and Simplepay will remain independent companies. Founders and managing directors Daniel Altehoefer and Jason Altehoefer will continue to manage the companies. The sale will be concluded as of 1 January 2018. Approval from the German Federal Financial Supervisory Authority (BaFin) and the Bundeskartellamt is not necessary.

‘PCS PayCard Service and Simplepay have built up an efficient sales structure for small and medium-size enterprises – and we see plenty of potential in exactly this market segment. With continued digitisation, small and medium-size enterprises will need to take on the topics of online retail and omnichannel sales in addition to modern payment solutions for the point of sale. Concardis offers all of that from a single source. Through the bundling of product solutions under one roof, we can develop the right offers for very specific needs and retail segments,’ says Marcus W. Mosen, CEO of Concardis.

‘As part of the Concardis Group, we can significantly expand our range of products for our customers, thereby providing them with even better service. At the same time, we can enhance our sales opportunities in the segment of small and medium-size enterprises with Concardis,’ says Daniel Altehoefer, founder and managing director of PCS PayCard Service. His nephew Jason Altehoefer, founder and managing director of Simplepay, adds: ‘We are happy to now be part of a corporate group which is deeply rooted in the German market and invests in new products and solutions. We and Concardis both stand out thanks to our understanding of the payment business and the needs of our customers – perfect conditions for a successful partnership.’

PCS PayCard Services and Simplepay have made very good names for themselves as independent sales organisations in their locations of Mannheim and Berlin. With a total of 35 employees, the two companies see to the needs of some 4,700 customers with approximately 6,500 terminals. In 2016, the transaction volume of credit card payments amounted to €98 million.

With the acquisition of the two terminal providers, Concardis Group is continuing its growth strategy: as recently as August 2017, technical network operator Cardtech GmbH was integrated into the corporate group. Four months before that, invoice purchase specialist Ratepay was acquired by the group, supported by the shareholders Advent International and Bain Capital Private Equity. The stated objective of the two financial investors is to make Concardis a payment champion of German-speaking Europe through increased investment in infrastructure and innovation.

WEEE – SMEs discuss aspirations and reality with political representatives

On October 10th over 100 small and medium sized producers, retailers and representatives of European take-back schemes for electrical and electronic devices met on Hohenkammer Castle to discuss the political aspirations and the real problems of the implementation of the WEEE directive with representatives of the European Commission and German Environmental Protection Agency in a constructive way.

The fact that this event was fully booked by members of the VERE Association and customers of the take-e-way GmbH within short, shows how important this topic is, especially to SMEs.

The event concluded with the following results:

1. The future collection rates can only be met if citizens and retailers will be involved by lawmakers in a sufficient manner without being deterred by a detrimental bureaucracy.

2. Well-known online platforms convey the impression of legitimacy and facilitate commercial direct imports of unregistered, unchecked and possibly hazardous products at dumping costs, due to avoidance of compliance charges and even to tax evasion. An effective protection of law-abiding companies against this illegal competition is not in sight.

3. Due to diverse implementations of the WEEE directive and due to huge discrepancies with regard to legal execution, considerable business hurdles arise for companies who operate on a European scale.

4. Whole business sectors or sections thereof completely ignore the ElektroG (Electrical and Electronic Equipment Act = German WEEE conversion), while small producers get prosecuted even for the slightest transgressions. This certainly leads to warped proportionalities.

5. Several new features resulting from the revision of the ElektroG did not get implemented in a practical manner, e.g. the authorized legal representative provision. Related adjustments are urgently called for.

6. Constructive criticism relating to the circumstances described above has been met with exclusion and ignorance by some administrative agencies.

7. A most gratifying willingness to cooperate in improving the overall circumstances has been shown by the European Commission and the German Federal Environmental Protection Agency.

It is our sincere hope that this event only forms the prelude to a continued betterment of the circumstances for the implementation of the WEEE directive by retailers and SMEs and we will continue to advocate the concerns of the SMEs, so that these cannot be ignored any further. The original goal of the ElektroG, e.g. guaranteeing higher collection amounts of partly hazardous electronic waste devices and their reuse and recycling, in our opinion has been neglected for the benefit of an unconstructive bureaucracy.
