Martin Stillger new CEO of thyssenkrupp Schulte

Effective February 1, 2019, Martin Stillger will take over as Chairman of the thyssenkrupp Schulte trading organization. His predecessor Ilse Henne joined the Materials Services Executive Board at the beginning of the year as Chief Operating Officer.

The 55-year-old, who studied mechanical engineering, brings with him over ten years of management experience from thyssenkrupp Materials Services: Among other things, he has headed the materials distributor’s Eastern European subsidiaries since 2012. He has also been responsible for the business units in the Western Europe region and of Technical Services since 2018. He will continue to hold these positions. Before joining thyssenkrupp, Stillger worked for Barmag AG for 17 years, five of which as sales director and chief executive officer.

BASF at BAU 2019 – Novel High-Performance Insulation Presented in First Carbon Concrete Composite Facade Elements

BASF is presenting its high-performance insulation materials in a new application at the world’s flagship fair for architecture, materials and systems in Munich from January 14 to 19, 2019. The innovative high-performance products SLENTITE® and SLENTEX® are a new generation of super-slim aerogel-based insulation materials with outstanding material properties. BASF is presenting its first examples of applications in carbon concrete composite facade elements in a single-family house.

Slim concrete facades for residential cube using SLENTITE® and SLENTEX®

Combining new materials with renewable energy sources is the secret of success of housing of the future. Currently under construction in Leipzig is a modern, cube-shaped single-family house that puts this principle into practice. In a central location, the three-story building is being erected with a hybrid load-bearing structure of carbon concrete composite (C³) and reinforced concrete. The exterior exposed concrete shell is a highly durable precast C³ element 4 cm thick, while the inner shell, also of precast C³, is 6 cm thick. To achieve an extra-slim wall construction, the new SLENTITE® and SLENTEX® high-performance materials can be used for the insulation between them, reducing the wall thickness in the non-load-bearing core by 50 percent over conventional insulation materials. For the overall facade element construction, this means a thickness of 18 centimeters for a KfW 55 standard wall with 0.21 W/m² •K. Slimming down the exterior wall significantly facilitates not only new aesthetic approaches, but also a gain in space, which is becoming increasingly precious in inner-city building. In addition, the two high-performance insulation materials can be integrated in the automated production of the elements in the precast concrete plant without further system adjustments. This is a feature offered solely by these high-performance insulants, as confirmed by Alexander Kahnt, chief architect and research associate at Leipzig University of Applied Sciences (HTWK): “Owing to their outstanding insulation performance, SLENTITE and SLENTEX are ideal for the production of slim precast element walls.” Listen to the talk on this subject in the FORUM Zukunft Bau (Booth No. 202) on 14.01.19 at 5.20 pm.

High-performance insulation in flat roofs

Owing to its slim profile, SLENTITE® is excellently suited to applications where conventional insulation materials reveal their limitations. To create same-level transitions such as between an interior room and a roof terrace or in openings for windows or doors, SLENTITE panels are the only feasible choice. Around elements installed in exterior walls such as roller shutter boxes or in radiator recesses, the novel insulation material also prevents thermal bridges as it is only half as thick as conventional materials. Thresholds leading onto flat roofs can be executed without changes in levels, and projections in the insulation plane due to construction joints can be overcome without difficulty. In the single-family house in Leipzig, the roof terrace is being executed with a layer of SLENTITE® insulation. This permits a same-level transition without modification of the load-bearing structure – another milestone in the implementation of energy-efficient strategies in the construction sector.

SLENTITE® – the slim panel for all climates

SLENTITE® is the first purely polyurethane-based aerogel ever to be produced. The heavy-duty aerogel insulation panel, which consists of 90 percent air and is breathable, permits insulation up to 50 percent slimmer than conventional materials – for maximum efficiency combined with high aesthetics. As a pioneering high-performance insulation material, its open-porous structure creates a pleasant interior climate and helps to cut energy costs. Its outstanding insulation performance (λ = 18 mW/m •K) is coupled with excellent processing qualities. The clean, dust-free panels can be easily cut to size on site and applied directly to walls or coated beforehand. “Thanks to this unparalleled combination of product features, SLENTITE® enables space-saving insulation solutions in both new builds and energy upgrades,” explains Dr. Marc Fricke, Project Management and Marketing SLENTITE® at BASF.

SLENTEX® – flexible and efficient insulation

SLENTEX® is an easy-to-process and non-combustible material based entirely on mineral raw materials. As a single-layer, flexible mat, it is now available for a variety of applications in the construction and modernization sectors.

SLENTEX® is a highly efficient and extra-slim insulation mat. With a λD value of 19 mW/m • K, the material achieves much lower thermal conductivity than conventional mineral insulation materials and permits the construction of very slim wall constructions. Beneficially, the material is non-combustible, has an A2-s1, d0 fire class, and is ETA-certified. SLENTEX® permits the diffusion of water vapor (µ ~ 5) while also being hydrophobic, thus making it ideal for facade applications. “Thanks to its flexibility, the insulation material adapts very well to different building geometries and meets high energy standards at the same time,” says Dr. Wibke Lölsberg, Project Management and Marketing High-Performance Insulation Materials at BASF.

MMK relies on PQA® for quality management across all processes

Magnitogorsk Iron & Steel Works (MMK), Russia, has placed an order with MET/Con, an SMS group company (www.sms-group.com), for the implementation of the quality management system PQA® (Product Quality Analyzer). Together, MMK, SMS group and MET/Con intend to set a milestone with this project and show how the location’s performance and quality levels can be improved thanks to total process and production transparency.

MMK produces around 10 million tons per year quality steel at its site in Magnitogorsk; this steel is used in the construction and automobile industries, for example, and for pipeline and mechanical engineering. As part of a company-wide Industrie 4.0 initiative, MMK will implement the new PQA® quality management system in order to further improve quality levels across all processes in Magnitogorsk, as well as stabilize production processes, improve on-time delivery performance, and thus improve its competitive position.

The PQA® system is a holistic IT solution that operates on know-how based expert rules. Among other things, the advanced software and database solution from QuinLogic GmbH in Aachen, also an SMS group company, is to be used. This approach has been successfully implemented in the past at selected flat steel and long product manufacturers with a wide range of downstream processing stages.

The PQA® system conducts an online analysis of process, production, and quality data from steel production, through casting and rolling, right down to surface finishing and refining. The PQA® expert rules, which can be freely configured and fed with specific know-how, take into account customer and order-specific information in the quality assessment process or when the material is approved for further processing.

The modular software structure comprises a LogicDesigner for flexible rule adaptation, a quality assessment module, and a web-based reporting system. The centerpiece of the quality management system is the DataCorrelator software module, which also covers current topics such as big data analyses and artificial intelligence (AI). Various intelligent mathematical evaluation methods, including pattern recognition options, identify and indicate correlations that can be directly used for process optimization.

IPS: the facade screw for ETICS – Quick, flexible, no thermal bridge!

With its new insulation screw IPS, CELO Befestigungssysteme GmbH is presenting another innovation for fastenings in external thermal insulation composite systems (ETICS). The special screw IPS enables extremely quick direct fastenings

in ETICS with no thermal bridge.

IPS is perfectly suitable for direct fastening of wall connection profiles, metal sheets, base protection profiles, cornice covers etc. You can install the screw directly through the 8 mm holes, which are common for standard profiles, into the insulation.

Thanks to the head hole and by using a short 3.5 mm screw, it is also possible to fasten objects such as motion detectors, signs, little lamps etc. directly into the insulation and without thermal bridge. Another advantage is that only a small hole remains in the insulation after the removal.

The special screw IPS is made out of glass fibre-reinforced, weather and UV resistant nylon. The stylish flat head with EPDM seal ensures an optimal sealing and adaption to the ground. It is available in different colours. Due to its length of 80 mm, the IPS can be used for almost every insulated facades. Suitable insulation boards are polystyrene and rigid foam boards; the recommended load is approx. 4 kg.

Thanks to its sharp drilling tip, the innovative insulation screw IPS can generally be used in ETICS without pre-drilling.

New material for generators: thyssenkrupp Schulte supplies material for innovative aluminum fan blades

thyssenkrupp Schulte, a company of thyssenkrupp’s Materials Services business unit, has collaborated with Siemens to develop new fan blades made from a special aluminum alloy. The innovative material is used among other things in generator cooling fans.

Gerald Mulot, sales manager for major customers at thyssenkrupp Schulte, believes this will deliver significant cost benefits to the customer: “Being in close proximity to our customers means we can check their production processes regularly for potential savings. That was the case with the fan blades. The switch from steel to aluminum will provide Siemens with the same functionality at significantly lower cost.”

The optimized part was identified as part of thyssenkrupp Schulte’s central key account support. Extensive tests were conducted and trial deliveries met all requirements.

thyssenkrupp Schulte will now supply Siemens with several tons of aluminum mill products per year from its logistics center in Dortmund on a just-in-time basis. “That will allow Siemens to concentrate fully on its core activities,” says Mulot.
