P3 collaborates with Amazon to provide system integration and testing for Alexa Auto

P3, an engineering, technology development and management consultancy firm, announces a collaboration with Amazon’s Alexa Auto team to provide system integration and testing services for automakers integrating Alexa into their vehicles.

At the 2019 Consumer Electronics Show’s GENIVI Showcase, a special reception designed to kick off the premier annual event, and the 2019 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS), P3 will showcase its Connected Vehicle Voice Recognition services with Alexa built-in, along with its core capabilities.

“This is where we need to be in terms of Voice Recognition capabilities and in making today’s drive and vehicle ownership a truly positive experience,” said Philip Potkowski, Managing Partner, P3 North America. “It is another example of how P3 is committed to providing clients with a truly end-to-end experience, from strategy consulting through development and implementation,” added Hakan Ekmen, CEO of P3 communications.

In addition to demonstrating voice recognition access to Alexa features and capabilities like music, weather, and traffic, the preview system will showcase specific in-vehicle features that could be introduced to simplify customers’ interactions in the car.

For example, the system could alert drivers of any maintenance-related issue: when passengers ask Alexa about a maintenance alert light, Alexa could respond with the description and an offer to schedule an appointment with a local dealer or service center. Alexa could then cross-reference the driver’s calendar with the dealer’s service scheduling system and proactively suggest a potential service appointment.

“By integrating Alexa into the vehicle, we believe we can make the in-car experience simpler, more productive, and more entertaining for our customers,” said Ned Curic, VP of Alexa Auto at Amazon. “We’re excited to be working with P3 to deliver new, vehicle-specific features and capabilities to Alexa, and to make it easier for automakers and suppliers to embed Alexa into their vehicles.”

In addition to the GENIVI Showcase, P3 and Alexa will be demonstrating this at the North American International Auto Show during media and industry preview days in the AutoMobili-D space at Cobo Center in Detroit.

EPSON Accepts Orders For New USB Resynchronization ICS For Automotive Applications

Seiko Epson Corporation (TSE: 6724, "Epson") has begun accepting orders for the S2R72A11, a new USB resynchronization integrated circuit for automotive applications that supports USB 2.0, stabilizes communications, and improves connectivity with smartphones. Epson plans to produce 200,000 of the new chips per month.

USB ports, convenient and popular interfaces for in-vehicle systems, have become standard equipment on dashboards and consoles. However, USB connections tend to become less reliable as cable length increases. Epson first addressed this problem in 2009 with the release of the S2R72A4 series, a line of hub controllers that provide stable communications, improve the connectivity of in-vehicle USB devices, and are used in many in-vehicle systems.

The new S2R72A11, like Epson’s existing products, offers robust communications performance, supports the latest smartphone functions, and provides enhanced connectivity with in-vehicle systems. Smartphones are already being connected to in-vehicle systems for people to enjoy music, but apps that allow you to directly control your smartphone on a navigation system display are also gaining popularity, making smartphone connectivity essential for car navigation systems. To provide such connectivity, however, automotive ICs are required to adapt itself to unconventional connections such as USB On-the-Go*1 and issues for establishing stable connection are cropping up in the development of automotive applications.
Epson’s new IC has an integrated bus monitor that recognizes the switching of host and device terminals and automatically switches the USB communication pathway.

In addition, the new product satisfies the strict quality requirements of the automotive industry. It is compliant with AEC-Q100*2 and operates at temperatures up to 105°C. The package (SQFN5-32pin-W) is a compact 5 mm x 5 mm and occupies minimal space. A wettable flank*3 package is used to improve convenience during visual inspection of automotive equipment.

Epson is committed to helping its customers improve the performance of their products with solutions that leverage Epson’s efficient, compact, and precision technologies.

*1 USB On-The-GoUSB On-The-Go (OTG) is a standardized specification for USB connections that allows a device to read data from a USB connection without requiring a PC. With OTG, it becomes possible that a host and peripheral device can exchange roles.

*2 AEC-Q100The Automotive Electronics Council (AEC) is an industry group that creates standards for the reliability and qualification of automotive electronics. It was formed by the “Big Three” U.S. automobile manufacturers in partnership with major electronic component manufacturers. The AEC standard is a de facto global standard that has been widely adopted as a standard for automotive electronic components.

*3 Wettable flank packageA package with solder pads that have been treated to make it easier to visually confirm whether the package is properly soldered to a board.

Epson shipping samples of a 32-bit microcontroller with dedicated sound hardware

Seiko Epson Corporation (TSE: 6724, "Epson") has begun shipping samples of the S1C31D50, a 32-bit microcontroller with dedicated sound hardware for 2-channel sound. Epson plans to produce 200,000 units per month of each model.

Sound is becoming an increasingly popular feature in home electronics, remote controllers for home appliances, industrial devices, health and fitness equipment with guidance systems, and alarms in office buildings, shopping complexes, and factories. This MCU is ideal for all these applications. An ARM® Cortex®-M0+ processor integrated with a dedicated HW Processor provides 2-channel sound on a single MCU chip. The use of two channels enables music and voice to be played simultaneously, lending audio guidance greater elegance and warmth. Voice speed can also be flexibly adjusted.

The MCU’s dedicated HW Processor sound hardware boasts a pair of special features. First, the HW Processor plays sound without requiring CPU resources, so CPU resources can be allocated to other processes even during sound playback. The use of a high-compression algorithm (16 kbps @ 16 kHz) shrinks the size of sound data memory, making it possible to provide a large amount of sound data and sound data in multiple languages. Epson also offers a PC tool that provides a development environment for easily creating sound data in Japanese, English, Chinese, and Korean without studio recording.
Second, the MPU also has a self-memory check function that can detect failures in built-in RAM, built-in Flash, and external SPI-Flash memories without using CPU resources.

Epson is committed to helping its customers improve the performance of their products with solutions that leverage Epson’s efficient, compact, and precision technologies.

* A processor designed by U.K-based ARM Limited, the ARM® Cortex®-M0+ is ARM’s most energy-efficient processor and by far the most widely used processor in the market.

Logwin: Fun and entertainment at the nationwide family day while fundraising for Save the Children

Ball bath, a drawing competition and face painting. Last weekend, at locations where employees normally provide smoothly functioning logistics for their customers, Logwin employees and their families were invited to take part in a family day event. Many took this welcome opportunity to enjoy something different with their families. More than 2.000 employees visited locations across Germany with their families and joined in the celebrations at Logwin’s first family day event. Celebration took not only place in Germany, the colleagues in Austria and Hong Kong met as well for a family day. Donations were collected for the children’s charity Save the Children, and with a donation from the company, a total of 50.000 euros was raised for the good cause.

The starting point for the family days was a joint event involving Logwin branches and representatives from Save the Children on the occasion of the World Children´s Day on 20. November 2017. In an opening speech by Germany’s Save the Children CEO Susanna Krüger, she emphasised the importance of corporate involvement, such as that from Logwin, for the organisation’s work, and wished all Logwin employees and their families fun at the upcoming family day. Coffee, cake and a barbecue was provided for the employees and their families who were in attendance at the opening in Berlin and a bouncy castle and other attractions were available for the children. A highlight was the handing over of a trailer unit displaying designs from children who had taken part in a company-wide drawing competition.

Lots on offer for children and adults

Celebrations took place across the whole weekend at Logwin locations throughout Germany. Some locations joined together to offer an extensive programme of events with a diversity of attractions for both young and old. For example, there was knock-down-the-tins competition and tombola in Munich. In Stuttgart, tours of the airport were on offer with food-trucks providing refreshments. In Hamburg, children were able to decorate gingerbread hearts and pack a container. In Nuremberg, a turntable ladder from the fire service provided high times. Monchengladbach held a Logwin quiz treasure hunt. In Großostheim, children could spray graffiti onto a trailer unit. In Erfurt, geo coaching was on offer. In Schwäbisch Gmünd, families were provided with stick bread and marshmallows and in many other locations, events were provided for everyone to enjoy a great day. There was of course refreshments for the employees and their families. In Großostheim, these were even accompanied by with music from a band.

Successful cooperation with Save the Children

The idea of the family day emerged in a joint workshop in June with Logwin employee representatives and Save the Children. The aim of the family day was to give families an opportunity to celebrate and have fun together. This was to be accompanied with information on the worldwide activities of Save the Children for the right and protection of children as well as fundraising for the child protection charity. In past years, Logwin has supported Save the Children by transporting aid and making donations.

By the end of the event, everyone had enjoyed the fund and entertainment together, learnt something about Save the Children, ate and drunk well, and made donations to a good cause. An all-round successful event.
