SteelFab 2019 in Sharjah

For the third time in succession, the DVS – German Welding Society presented itself at the SteelFab fair in Sharjah/U.A.E. From January 14 to 17, 2019, the society was the information and contact point with specialist competence here for any visitors to the fair with questions about the training, further education and qualification of welding personnel.

The primary subjects related to the significance of the welding technology training in the United Arab Emirates and to the need for certified educational establishments according to the German role model in the Arab region. During the opening event of the fair, General Manager of the DVS, Dr.-Ing. Roland Boecking, explained the different educational paths in welding technology to the representatives from the political and economic fields, such as Sheikh Khaled Bin Abdullah Bin Sultan Al Qasimi (Chairman of Sharjah Department of Seaports and Customs and Chairman of Hamriyah Free Zone Authority), HE Abdullah Bin Sultan Al Owais (Chairman of the Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Chairman of Expo Centre Sharjah), Saif Al Midfa (Chief Executive Officer of the Expo Centre Sharjah), as well as the Consul General Günter Rauer and the Vice Consul Alexandra Chambless. In this respect, there was particularly great interest in the diagram which is entitled "Career paths in welding technology", was developed by DVS and portrays various stages of the welding technology education for specialist personnel on the German labour market. Furthermore, DVS had numerous information possibilities in store for skilled workers, technologists and universities in the fields of joining, cutting and surfacing.

"The great interest in DVS’s certified education system shows me that, for many visitors, it is the epitome of high quality standards and is regarded as exemplary and worthy of imitation in the international comparison," according to Dr. Boecking. "Every year here in Sharjah, I experience that the subject of ‚training and further education in welding technology‘ is always a top subject on DVS’s fair booth." For this reason, the society will now step up its efforts to find cooperation partners which can implement DVS’s objectives in the region by the Persian Gulf.

SteelFab is the largest trade fair in the metal processing industry in the Middle East. There, DVS presented the results of its joint technical-scientific work at the German Pavilion on a joint booth with Messe Essen.

Fast, high-resolution characterization of laser and VCSEL light sources

As a participant at the German pavilion, Instrument Systems is showcasing its premium class spectroradiometers at Photonics West / USA. The globally recognized reference device CAS 140D forms the basis of the system and is supplemented by our special model, the high-resolution CAS 140CT-HR. Both devices can be viewed in simulated applications at exhibition booth 4545-38 from 5–7 February 2019. In combination with various accessories, the color coordinates, color temperature or color rendering index of LED modules and displays can be measured with the highest level of precision. As they are particularly stable and reliable in operation, the array spectroradiometers of the CAS series are ideally suited to 24/7 use in the production line. The design of the CAS 140CT-HR is specially aligned to the measurement of narrow-band emission sources such as laser diodes or VCSEL. The extremely high spectral resolution of up to 0.2 nm half-band width and particularly short integration times as low as 9 ms permit fast testing in the laboratory and production.

High-resolution spectroradiometry

Instrument Systems supports the optoelectronics industry in innovative product development by supplying state-of-the-art equipment for light measurement. This also holds true for laser light sources that are constantly gaining in importance for scientific and high-tech applications, e.g. autonomous driving. Instrument Systems developed the CAS 140CT-HR high-resolution array spectroradiometer specifically for the absolute characterization of narrow-band emission sources. It delivers measurement results with a high spectral resolution of up to 0.2 nm half-band width, accompanied by short measurement times as low as 9 ms. Above all, the CAS 140CT-HR offers decisive advantages compared to conventional technologies for the fast testing of laser diodes or vertical cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSEL). Dispersive, scanning or Fourier-transformed IR spectrometers (FTIR) have movable parts that react sensitively to production vibrations. The CAS 140CT-HR contains fixed components and is particularly stable and reliable in operation – making it ideal for exacting tasks in production and the laboratory.

Display measurements set up individually

Premium spectroradiometers can be set up as a DTS system for individual display measurements. The light radiation is launched with the TOP 200 telescopic optical probe connected to the spectrometer by an optical fiber. Due to the flexible fiber connector, the measurement adapter can be easily changed and the system quickly configured for other applications, e.g. LED measurement. The system measures, among other things, the radiance and luminance and the color of displays and backlit symbol displays. The DTS system can be universally employed for display technology, e.g. LCD, LED or OLED.

Welding technology training popular at SteelFab

Last year, there was the German joint booth (German Pavilion) at the SteelFab fair in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates (UAE), for the first time on the initiative of the German Welding Society (DVS). This year too (from January 15 to 18), 16 German exhibitors were able to profit from a joint appearance on the German Pavilion under the auspices of the Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi).

The government of the emirate of Sharjah (represented, in particular, by Sheikh Fahim bin Sultan Al Quasimi and HE Abdullah Sultan Al Owais), Saif Al Midfa, Chief Executive Officer of the fair centre called the Expo Centre Sharjah, as well as Günter Rauer, Consul General, visited the German joint booth during the opening of SteelFab. Professor Dr.-Ing. Heinrich Flegel, President of DVS, and Dr.-Ing. Roland Boecking, General Manager of DVS, explained the function of the German Pavilion and the activities of DVS to the prominent guests. In this respect, there were also discussions about the significance of welding technology training in the UAE. It was shown that the government of Sharjah has a great need for an educational establishment in situ according to the role model of DVS and its affiliated company, GSI – Gesellschaft für Schweißtechnik International GmbH. Especially in the emirate of Sharjah, large-scale welding technology structures are being fabricated with welders from India and Pakistan. In particular, the EXPO 2020 in Dubai is ensuring an additional demand for qualified welding technology personnel here.

DVS will now elaborate a concept and make this available to the Consul General for further consultations. "We are pleased that the wish for our welding technology know-how in the UAE was formulated at the highest level," stated Flegel, DVS President. DVS is now holding discussions with GSI in Germany in order to talk about how to proceed for an educational establishment in Sharjah.

In the year before, the subject of "training and further education in welding technology" had already been a top subject on the fair booth of DVS. This time too, DVS was able to register a strong demand from the interested visitors. This year, the society was once again represented with its own booth together with GSI SLV-TR, Turkey, a foreign company belonging to GSI; but this time on the new ESSEN WELDING & CUTTING PAVILION @ SteelFab organised by Messe Essen GmbH. With its pavilion, the longstanding partner of DVS offered the exhibitors at the world’s premier fair, SCHWEISSEN & SCHNEIDEN, the springboard into an important market in the Middle East.

The discussions at SteelFab about a possible educational establishment for welding technology training were a great success for DVS and a valuable contribution to the dissemination of joining technology knowledge in the UAE.

The next SteelFab will take place in January 2019.

Professor Dr.-Ing.

VDMA Pavilion at the Shanghai World of Packaging as Showroom for Packaging Technologies

  • Sixteen German medium-sized companies use the joint presentation at the trade fair under the label `Made in Germany´
  • Chinese packaging market with enormous market potentials

It was only a matter of time before China replaced the US as the world’s largest packaging market. According to Smithers Pira, packaging consumption in China is increasing by 5.5 percent annually. From $ 175.5 billion in 2015, the market will grow to $ 229.5 billion by 2020. By comparison, in the US, 2.8 percent annual growth and an increase from 165.5 billion to 190.2 billion US dollars are expected.

The figures show the importance and potential of the Chinese packaging market. It is therefore important for suppliers of packaging solutions to be present in China. Last week, the Shanghai World of Packaging (swop) trade fair offered such an opportunity. From 7 – 10 November, 30,000 trade visitors flocked to the Shanghai New International Expo Centre where the swop with its four specialized events PacPro Asia, CHINA-PHARM, FoodPex and BulkPex took place. Among them: Twelve German medium-sized companies that presented themselves to the trade fair visitors under the label `Made in Germany´ at the German pavilion.

The joint pavilion as an opportunity to enter the market

Organised by the VDMA Association for Printing and Paper Technology as well as Messe Düsseldorf as part of the official German Trade Fair Quality Abroad programme of the Federal Republic of Germany, the pavilion offered sixteen medium-sized companies the chance to present themselves at the swop in an attractive and efficient way. Moreover, without compromising on stand size, stand design and location: “For us, it was the right time and the ideal location – as a kick-off, so to speak, in order to enter the Chinese packaging market with our portfolio,” said Markus Weidle, Account Manager of Max Schlatterer GmbH & Co. KG from Herbrechtingen, enthusiastically. Christian Muhm, Key Account Manager of Siegsdorf-based NOWOFOL Kunststoffprodukte GmbH & Co. KG, also saw the pavilion as “the optimal platform“ for the first step into this important growth market.

Other companies that have been active in China for longer also used the joint presentation at this trade fair: “The joint pavilion is a good platform in order to meet existing customers and to make new contacts,“ stated Carsten Reinhard, Area Sales Manager of D.W. RENZMANN Apparatebau GmbH from Monzingen an der Nahe. According to Area Sales Manager Marc Hammon, Hänsel Processing GmbH from Hannover, too, primarily wanted to show presence in Shanghai. Above all, since the swop was not only visited by professionals from China, but also from the surrounding growth markets. The more so since this trade fair, which was launched by Messe Düsseldorf and local partners in 2015, is the only supra-regional trade fair for machinery and technology for the production and finishing of packages, for packaging means as well as the associated auxiliary tools and raw materials .

Market growth on all fronts

No matter whether the packaging is made of paper, cardboard, plastic foils, metal or glass. The demand in China is on the rise. On the one hand, because this country has a growing consumption-friendly middle class who appreciate products in high-quality packaging. On the other hand, because there are more and more single-person households with a demand for small packaging sizes and convenience products.

With its four specialized trade fairs, the swop addresses both the demand for packaging solutions for food, beverages and pharmaceutical products and the demand for packaging means, packaging and transportation technology. Therefore, it is equally interesting for the suppliers of printing and paper technology, plastics and rubber machinery as well as packaging machines. “China is the most important market for German technology manufacturers from the total packaging sector. At the swop, they present solutions ranging from packaging materials through to smart packaging,” said VDMA Project Leader Dr. Sven Breitung.

Dr. Markus Heering, Managing Director of the VDMA Association for Printing and Paper Technology, added: “The exhibitors of our joint pavilion represent a broad mix of the latest packaging technologies. Their presentations to the Chinese trade public include increasingly networked machines, plants and components which make packaging production and packaging finishing highly efficient, very economical and resource-saving for the user.“

Highly satisfied exhibitors

“Great service, a good trade fair and excellent organisation,” was the fully satisfied conclusion drawn by Wilson Wu, representative of the companies Löschpack, Hansa Mixer, Hänsel Processing. Likewise Jim Foote, Vice President Business Development of Michael Hörauf Maschinenfabrik GmbH & Co. KG, expressed high satisfaction by saying in his summary: “The swop 2017 went very well also thanks to the support provided by the VDMA and Messe Düsseldorf,” adding that this trade fair is one of the most important events in the growing Chinese market already now and that he therefore presumes that his company will expand its presence at the next swop in 2019.
