MAPAL rounds off the portfolio for milling with radial ISO indexable inserts

At AMB in Stuttgart, MAPAL will present a milling programme with pressed, radial ISO indexable inserts, thus completing the portfolio of standard milling tools. Up to now, the company has mainly focused on a milling program with ground tangential ISO indexable inserts. These are used in particular for special applications, very large stock removal, unstable conditions or disc milling cutters.

MAPAL has incorporated the comprehensive know-how gathered in these special applications into the new series of milling cutters with radial ISO indexable inserts. The new powerful face, shoulder, slot and shell end face milling cutters are designed for roughing and for medium machining of cast iron, steel and stainless steel. They have optimally designed tool bodies with the ideal number of teeth for the respective application. Positive and negative indexable inserts made of four different PVD cutting materials, based on newly developed carbide substrates and coatings, are available for the milling cutters.

Depending on the requirement, the most economically efficient version is used. For example, between eight and 16 cutting edges per radial ISO indexable insert can be selected for face milling and between two, four and eight cutting edges for shoulder milling.

The new tools are convincing in use due to their very smooth running and low noise. In addition, very long tool lives are achieved due to the possibilities for exact adjustment to the respective material and the respective application.

Kardex Remstar: How Merck stores temperature-sensitive material under controlled conditions

Merck KGaA is one of the world’s leading pharma and chemical companies. Its biggest research and development center is located in Darmstadt. The company needed an efficient concept for its new research building to allow it to store the pharmaceutical substances used in the course of its research in a climate-controlled environment. The solution from Kardex Remstar ensures that sensitive substances can always be safely stored and retrieved.

The main elements of the special solution developed by Kardex Remstar are three Vertical Lift Modules from the Shuttle XP series, which have been adapted with a climate-control function for use in chilled conditions. The challenge was to integrate three storage zones, each with a differently controlled climate for the sensitive substances, including a chilled zone and a deep-frozen zone.  Due to the very high safety standards at Merck, measures had to be taken to guarantee that the controlled storage conditions could be permanently maintained. Kardex Remstar made sure of this by integrating a redundant system featuring its own refrigeration units and sensor technology, which takes over in the event of a fault.

A range of additional measures provide maximum protection. The air within the unit is dehumidified by a drying system to prevent the presence of humidity and frost. The Shuttle XP units are housed in insulated cells so that the laboratory staff can access the chilled products at room temperature from their workstations without affecting the climate-controlled environment. Additional laser pointers and position indicators ensure that items are picked with maximum precision. The space-saving concept is also extremely ergonomic.

The advantages at a glance:

  • Secure storage in both chilled and deep-frozen conditions
  • Maintenance of controlled storage conditions assured by a redundant system
  • Simple and precise access to items from areas at room temperature
  • The smaller footprint occupies 66% less space
  • Ergonomic operation

Aluminium Brazing: 10th congress with a new record

The series of successes is showing no signs of stopping: From June 12 to 14, 270 participants and 17 exhibitors from 27 countries used the 10th International "Aluminium Brazing 2018" Congress with an Exhibition in Düsseldorf in order to exchange experience. Together with DVS Media GmbH, the German Welding Society (DVS) successfully staged this international event for the fourth time already.

The organisers and the exhibitors were pleased to establish the constantly growing number of participants in the congress. At the same time, they were also able to register an increase in guests from the Asian region, such as Korea or China.

Dr. Hans-Walter Swidersky, Mentor of Aluminium Brazing, greeted the numerous participants and Dr.-Ing. Hartmut Schmoor, Chairman of the "Brazing/Soldering" Specialist Society in DVS, delivered the welcoming address on the occasion of the opening ceremony. Subsequently, the speakers from all over the world of aluminium brazing provided information. In this respect, the selection of the lectures about the subject areas of materials, testing, applications, equipment, quality management, process control as well as research and development met with great approval amongst the listeners. "Highly interesting, relevant to practice and exciting" was the tenor.

The accompanying exhibition was also received positively and thus well-visited. Here, there were a lot of intensive expert discussions about all aspects of the subject of aluminium brazing. Because all the participants and exhibitors concentrated on "networking" this time too.

With regard to technical relevance, establishing contacts as well as framework conditions, the vast majority of the participants rated the event as good to very good. Thus, two thirds now already know that they definitely want to come again. The next Aluminium Brazing will again take place in Düsseldorf at the end of April 2020.

Contributions to Aluminium Brazing 2018 are available from DVS Media GmbH, Düsseldorf, as proceedings entitled "DVS Reports, Volume 343" (ISBN 978-3-96144-035-1):

Ecovis Sydney provides comprehensive start-up services to UK film company

In November 2012 KEO Films, which had recently won a contract to produce an Australian version of a UK TV series, was put in contact with Ecovis Sydney, because they needed to get their footprint established urgently, before Christmas!

The key issues were:

  • What form should the Australian presence take?
  • While effectively a start-up in Australia, could they obtain bank debt funding for a commercial property they had identified for purchase?
  • How fast could all of this happen?

We quickly determined the most appropriate structure in which to combine asset protection, tax efficiency (in terms of their UK/Australia interaction) and manage their new Australian business.

This included a main trading company, an additional company in which to hold a primary production property, and a further company in which to hold the intellectual property that they expected to develop in Australia.

Within a few days we had:

  • established all three companies with ASIC (with David Conley as resident director for each), and had them registered for all necessary taxes with the ATO and OSR.
  • Through a referral to a local commercial lawyer, we ensured any necessary agreements between the three entities and the UK parent were being considered, to satisfy Australian/UK laws, as well as potential transfer pricing issues.
  • Through a referral to a local immigration agent, we ensured that the client was being advised on options for potential secondments of UK employees to Australia to assist in the local operations, and
  • through referral to several banks, we enabled the client to determine the best fit for their needs quickly, and they were able to purchase a commercial property with borrowed funds.

We subsequently provided ongoing tax, accounting and audit support for the Australian operations.

KEO Films enjoyed five years in Australian but for commercial reasons ceased operations in 2017 and reverted to a license arrangement with local third-party producers.

David Conley, Director, ECOVIS Clark Jacobs, Sydney, Australia
